Latvia flag

Sunday Jan. 20 - Remembrance Day for the Defenders of the Barricades in 1991. After establishing a pro-independence government in Latvia in May 1990, the Soviet government in Moscow increased pressure to block Latvia’s peaceful mass movement toward freedom. In January 1991 the Soviet Union mobilized its security forces in an attempt to remove Latvia’s elected leaders. In response, people from all over Latvia brought trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment to Rīga to build barricades around the government buildings and parliament. The face-off culminated on January 20th when Soviet special forces initiated a gun battle and temporarily seized the Ministry of the Interior. Although several people were killed, the barricades held and pro-democracy forces prevailed to restore full independence in August 1991. (From the Latvian Institute www.li.lv.)

Latvia flag

Saturday, Jan. 26 - International (de jure) Recognition of the Republic of Latvia. This remembrance day was a holiday in pre-World War II Latvia. It marks the day in 1921 when the Council of the newly formed League of Nations decided to formally recognize Latvia as an independent country. The United States of America formally recognized Estonia's, Latvia's and Lithuania's independence on July 28, 1922. After the forces of the Soviet Union occupied Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in June of 1940 and annexed them to the USSR in August of the same year, most countries, including the USA, continued, at least symbolically, to recognize the Baltic States as independent nations, thus denying legitimacy to these forcible and illegal acts.

Latvian Radio Choir at the BAM

Friday Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2, at 19:30 - Opera "War Sum Up" performance with music by Santa Ratniece sung by the Latvian Radio Choir, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Peter J Sharp Building, BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217. Music: Manga; Machine; Hotel Pro Forma; Vocals by Latvian Radio Choir; Directed by Kirsten Dehlholm. Twelve bodies, shadow-dappled and anonymous, stand on a looming stage. Amid this stylized tableau are lush, dissonant chorales by Latvian composer Santa Ratniece, alternating with crackling soundscapes by British electronic pop group the Irrepressibles, intoning hymns to the warrior, spy, and soldier. Music by The Irrepressibles, Santa Ratniece with Gilbert Nouno; Concept by Willie Flindt and Kirsten Dehlholm; Musical direction by Kaspars Putnins; Costumes by Henrik Vibskov; Lighting design by Jesper Kongshaug. Libretto from classic Noh theater edited by Willie Flindt. Manga drawings by Hikaru Hayashi. In Japanese with English subtitles.

Maxima store tragedy

Support victims of the "Maxima" store tragedy in Riga Latvia
On Thursday November 21 at the "Maxima" big-box store in the Zolitūde neighborhood of Riga, Latvia, the roof collapsed onto shoppers and workers in the store resulting in the deaths of at least 54 people. On Saturday evening (Riga time) emergency personnel suspended their search of the ruins for more victims until the following morning. They no longer believe they can find anyone alive and working in the unstable ruins at night poses too many risks. Three of the rescuers themselves have perished already. 13 people are unaccounted for.
In connection with this tragedy, a period of national mourning has been declared in Latvia from Sat. Nov. 23 until Mon. Nov. 25, and in New York the Permanent Mission of Latvia to the United Nations will have a condolence book for people to sign. Those who wish to do so may come to the Mission from Nov. 25-27 from 10 am to 12 noon and from 1 pm to 5 pm. The Mission's address is 333 East 50th Street, New York, NY 10022.
Local (New York) and national (USA) Latvian organizations are in the process of setting up a means by which individuals and organizations may donate in support of the victims of this tragedy and their families. Among these is the Latvian Ev. Luth. Congregation of New York – see www.nydraudze.org. Further information will be forthcoming.
Those who have financial accounts in Latvia may donate through the site ziedot.lv ("ziedot" means "donate"). Visit: www.ziedot.lv/lv/project/1762.

NY Latvian Church Camp Nometne Ēdamzale project Fundraising effort to ensure the future of Nometne in the Catskills

Help build a new Dining hall (in Latvian "Ēdam zāle")
for the Latvian Church Camp "Nometne" in the Catskills!

The current Dining Hall at the Latvian Church Camp "Nometne" in the Catskills, built in 1956, has served many generations of Latvian-Americans but the time has come to build a new dining facility. The owner of the camp, The Latvian Ev. Luth. Church of New York has, after much planning and discussion, decided on a plan to build a new hall on the site of the old one. This picture is an artist's rendering of the new dining hall, or "Ēdam zāle" as it is called in Latvian. Please consider donating generously so the beautiful Latvian Church Camp "Nometne" can continue serving Latvian people, young and old, for many more generations to come. Please visit: www.nydraudze.org and click on the fundraising logo pictured above where you will find plans, status and other information about this project.

Donate for the new Pastor Richards Zariņš Hall at the New York Latvian church camp "Nometne" in the Catskills!

The Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of New York is asking, from you personally, and from your local community - organizations and individuals – to support the construction of the new dining hall at the congregation's church camp "Nometne" in the Catskills. The new building will be named in honor of the congregation's pastor for many decades - Richards Zariņš (b. 1913 – d. 2006).

Those less familiar with the work of the Church camp "Nometne" may be forgiven for thinking that it serves mainly New York Latvian congregation members. So let us emphasize a few facts, which will testify to how much the Latvian Church Camp "Nometne" has given to all of North America's Latvian community.

  1. For the last several decades about 75% of "Nometne"s campers come from families outside the New York Latvian congregation. While it's true that many of them are fromj the northeast USA, butmany also come from the midwest, the west coast, from Canada and even from other countries. In other words, only 25% of the “nometņotāji” (i.e. "the campers") are New York congregation members.
  2. In the 55 years that camp "Nometne"has been in existence, over 10,000 children have spent one or more summers bērnu ir pavadījuši vienu vai vairākas vasaras Kaskiļu Nometnē.

Latvian Passport

As of Oct. 1, 2013, many Latvians abroad are allowed to hold dual citizenship.

Until now, Latvia's laws did not permit Latvian citizens to simultaneously be citizens of another country. In the years following the restoration of Latvia's independence in 1991, an exception was made to allow Latvian citizens in exile, and their descendents, who had acquired the citizenship of their countries of residence, to reclaim their right to Latvian citizenship without renouncing the citizenship of their home countries. But to take advantage of this exception one had to reclaim the right to Latvian citizenship by mid 1995. In the case of minors, their parents had to apply on their behalf. After 1995 this opportunity was no longer available.

On May 9, 2013 the Latvian Saeima (Parliament) adopted changes, effective October 1, 2013, to the laws to allow dual citizenship and most Latvians living in the USA and other countries may be eligible to apply for and receive Latvian citizenship while retaining other citizenship they may hold.

The following information is posted here as a public service and in order to interest those who may be eligible to take advantage of this opportunity, but please note that only information received directly from government sources may be considered authoritative. Please contact the Consular Department of the Embassy of Latvia in Washington DC to get the latest instructions before proceeding with any application. Visit www.latvia-usa.org.
